For the last few summers our family has packed up the camper, grabbed the sunscreen, and headed into the mountains for one of our favorite traditionsāa homeschool group camping trip in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Hosted at the Blanco River Group Campsite, this gathering has been a cherished part of our year recentlyāand 2025 marked our third time joining in.
Itās organized by a fellow homeschool mom who somehow juggles planning this trip and so many others while raising two awesome kids. Though weāve missed a few of her other adventures, this is one we always try to make time for.
This year, around 10 families camped together, with 18 kids staying onsite and even more joining for the day. The kids had free rein of the campsite, bonding over games, muddy toes, river splashes, and creative projects. It felt like a throwback to the best kind of childhoodāunstructured, unplugged, and unforgettable.

š What We Did

Hereās a peek at some of our favorite highlights:
ā Root House Coffee
Before heading out to the campsite, we made our traditional stop at Root House Coffee + Shop in Pagosa Springs. Not only is the coffee fantastic, but the cozy vibe and mountain-town aesthetic make it a must-do.
šæ The Hippy Dip
A favorite spot among locals and visitors, The Hippy Dip is a free riverside hot spring right in town. Our crew loved soaking in the warm water while the river rushed byānatureās spa day at its best!

š Mountain Pizza
Dinner one night came courtesy of Mountain Pizza & Taproom, which never disappoints. The view from the deck, fresh air, and kid-approved pies hit the spot after a long day outdoors.
š² Rail Biking in South Fork
Usually we add a rail biking adventure with Revolution Rails in nearby South Fork. Pedaling down a historic railroad line with mountain views all around? Yes, please. However, this year we missed out and were sad that we did.
šØ Creative Moments & Camp Magic
Back at camp, the kids found joy in the little thingsāpaint brushes, nature, and imagination. One of the sweetest touches? Our amazing group leader set up a dedicated rock painting and watercolor station, complete with supplies and space for the kids to freely create. It became a go-to zone throughout the trip, offering a calm, creative break between river dips and games.

Other magical moments included:
River Play & Games: From endless rounds of Red Light, Green Light to riverbank skipping and stone stacking, the kids never ran out of ideas. Mouse Rescue Mission: Perhaps the most talked-about event? A heartfelt attempt by the older girls to rescue an abandoned baby mouse they found near camp. They left it out hoping the mother would return, and when she didnāt, they sprang into action. They named her Millie, researched a nutrient solution, and even felted her a cozy Snuggie and buddy from wool scraps. Though Millie didnāt survive, the compassion, teamwork, and gentle care the girls showed was a touching reminder of the empathy that thrives in this kind of shared space.

š Why We Keep Coming Back
This trip is more than just campingāitās a time to slow down, reconnect with nature, and nurture relationships that matter. Watching our kids roam freely, build friendships, and care deeply for even the tiniest creatures? Thatās the magic of these moments.
Every night as the stars came out and conversations circled around the campfire, I was reminded how lucky we are to be part of a community that values curiosity, connection, and courage.
Whether youāre a homeschooler or simply love group camping, Pagosa Springs is an unforgettable destination.
š² Final Thoughts
Weāre already counting down to next year. To everyone who made this trip so special: thank you.
And to anyone considering a group trip like thisādo it. You donāt need perfection, just people who show up and a love for being outside together.

With curiosity and care,
